Gangs of New York

Gangs of New York

I took the father. Now I'll take the son.

The one thing that immediately jumps out at us from Gangs of New York is style. This film has style by the boatload. The term period piece is a no-brainer when applied to this film. Such exceptional art direction and production design, I can only commend the people behind this great piece of filmmaking.

While Leo DiCaprio does a commendable job, as always it is the impossible talent of Daniel Day-Lewis that holds this film aloft. Day-Lewis is the modern day Brando, and he is known for falling so into his roles that it actually intimidates his fellow cast members. Doing so, however, produces glorious performances such as this, and it is a sight to behold. Day-Lewis is an idol in my eyes, and a true inspiration.

Martin Scorsese crafts an elegant tale here, and it is certainly one to behold. If you can last the running time (which, while watching, feels a lot shorter), give this one a try.
