One of the greatest comic book films of all time, The Dark Knight is a monumental achievement in every form. Christopher Nolan improves on Batman Begins in every way, taking the comic book movie to the next level and then some.
This film has one of the best casts for a modern movie I’ve ever seen. Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, and of course the late, great Heath Ledger. It is of course Ledger that anchors this picture with his harrowing and unbelievable portrayal of the Joker. Whether or not he would’ve won the Academy Award had he not died is hard to say, but the nomination was undoubtedly justified. What surprised me about this movie is that, while everyone expected Ledger’s performance to be at such a high level, few to no one expected Aaron Eckhart’s performance as Harvey Dent to be at that same level if not better. It is the two of them that truly make this film, and indeed the scene of the two together in the hospital room remains one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
See this film. See it several times, and if you have already, see it once more. For Heath. And for yourself. It is a great, great film.
