Raiders of the Lost Ark

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Mr. Jones! I've heard a lot about you.

Another Harrison Ford flick, one far more popular and universally beloved, Raiders of the Lost Ark began the Indiana Jones trilogy (and yes, it is only a trilogy. ONLY A TRILOGY.) and catapulted Harrison Ford to even greater fame after Star Wars. In fact, his starring in Star Wars almost kept him from the role in Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster, but stronger heads prevailed, and the actor and character have become iconic in the minds of moviegoers the world over.

Raiders is the modern day swashbuckler adventure film, one that reinvents its genre as much as it defines it. Full of great action sequences, this is a film that will thrill damn near any audience. It also introduced the now cliched (thanks to Indy) device of having Nazis as the main villains, which was effective in the moment. Harrison Ford doffs his signature hat and gives us a witty and charismatic take on the adventure hero, and forever alters his future career as a result of his success. The ever-pervasive theme is once again done by John Williams; really any major theme of any popular movie of the last 30 years was in all likelihood a Williams score.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is a grand adventure with plenty of all the right bits in all the right places. Really, there’s not much more to be said about this one, including to go see it if you haven’t already; it’s just one of those cinematic adventures every filmgoer has to take in their lifetimes. It took me a while before I finally did see this one, but it was worth it when I did.

Arbitrary Rating: 9/10

  1. There was no greater experience as a kid than seeing this in the theater when it was released. This is one film that I have no ability to be objective about. I love it completely and irrationally.
